Authorities in Phat Diem and Binh son communes in the northern province of Ninh Binh on June 12 launched a campaign to collect and transfer biological samples from unidentified martyrs’ remains for DNA analysis, as part of the nationwide 500-day campaign for the search for, recovery and identification of fallen soldiers’ remains.
The initiative is regarded as a significant political mission aimed at honouring those who sacrificed their lives for the nation while helping fulfil the long-standing wishes of their families across Vietnam.
This is considered as a special political mission as well as a meaningful act of gratitude to those who sacrificed their lives for national independence, freedom, and the people's well-being.
The campaign will run from March 15, 2026 to July 27, 2027, with a mid-term review scheduled for late November 2026, after 250 days, and a final review expected in the fourth week of July 2027.
It targets to search for around 7,000 sets of remains, completing the collection of samples from unidentified graves and newly recovered remains, and conducting DNA analysis on approximately 18,000 samples. The campaign also aims to develop and operationalize a genetic database of martyrs' relatives to support identity verification.
