Vice Chairman of Provincial People’s Committee inspects disaster prevention efforts in Gia Lam commune

The inspection found two areas in Gia Lam commune at high risk of landslides: Meo Hill area in Hung Son village and the hill area behind Xich Tho Primary and Preschool in Dai Hoa village. These sites remain at risk of further landslides, posing threats to the lives and property of households living near the foot of the hills, as well as to livestock and pupils at the nearby schools during the rainy and flood season.

Reporting to the delegation, Gia Lam commune authorities said they had proactively developed disaster prevention and response plans based on the “four on-the-spot” principle, while reviewing high-risk areas and preparing personnel, vehicles, equipment and supplies for emergency response. Public information, communication and early warning efforts have also been strengthened.

Following the inspection, Dung asked Gia Lam commune to closely monitor weather developments and regularly review and update its disaster prevention and response plans, particularly for vulnerable areas at high risk of landslides. The commune was also requested to promptly report any difficulties or obstacles for timely direction and support.

Relevant agencies were instructed to work closely with local authorities and stand ready to evacuate residents from dangerous areas when necessary, ensuring the safety of people and their property.

Local authorities should also step up public information campaigns and provide guidance to help residents proactively prevent and mitigate risks, particularly households living in areas deemed unsafe, he said.

The Vice Chairman also asked provincial departments and agencies, within their respective mandates, to closely coordinate with the local administration to review and assess specific conditions at sites vulnerable to landslides and flooding and propose appropriate measures.

The departments and agencies should also provide timely support in terms of personnel, vehicles and supplies when necessary, helping strengthen local disaster response capacity and minimise damage caused by natural disasters, Dung added./.
