On August 19 (the 7th day of the 7th lunar month in the Year of the Horse), an incense offering ceremony was held at Luu Pho Temple, a national historical and cultural relic in Nam Dinh ward of Ninh Binh province, to commemorate the 762nd death anniversary of Grand Preceptor Tran Thu Do (1264 2026), a key figure in the establishment of the Tran Dynasty in the 13th and 14th centuries.
Provincial leaders attend an incense offering ceremony.
The ceremony was attended by Le Quoc Chinh, Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee and Chairman of the Provincial People’s Council; Dinh Thi Lua, Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee and Chairwoman of the Provincial Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee; and Tran Anh Dung, Member of the Provincial Party Committee’s Standing Board and Vice Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee, among others.
At the ceremony, delegates solemnly offered incense in tribute to Grand PreceptorTran Thu Do and recalled the life and career of the founding statesman of the Tran Dynasty.
Tran Thu Do played a pivotal role in the transfer of power from the Ly Dynasty to the Tran Dynasty, contributing significantly to the establishment and consolidation of the new dynasty during its formative years.
As Quoc Thuong phu (Imperial Preceptor-Father), Tran Thu Do advised the Tran Kings on building and strengthening the administrative apparatus and military, while promoting economic development, education and talent training. His efforts helped lay the foundations for the stability and development of the Tran Dynasty.
Notably, under the strategic leadership of Tran Thu Do and with the strong determination of the Vietnamese people, the Mongol invasion of 1258 was decisively defeated.
Luu Pho Temple in Nam Dinh ward is among the relics within the Tran historical and cultural complex, which has been recognised as a national-level historical relic by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. The temple is dedicated to Grand Preceptor Tran Thu Do and his wife, Linh Tu Quoc Mau Tran Thi Dung; Tran Quoc Tuan, also known as Hung Dao Dai Vuong; Princess Tran Bach Hoa; Tham hoa Ha Nhan Gia and his father; as well as the local tutelary deity.
The site also served as a base during the resistance against the Mongol forces. Luu Pho Temple was built on the ancient site of Luu Vien. Historical tradition holds that Tran Thu Do lived and worked here during his visits to the Tran Kings and the retired emperors at Trung Quang and Trung Hoa palaces in Thien Truong prefecture.
The anniversary is held on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month annually.
The annual incense offering ceremony provides an opportunity for local officials, Party members and residents to pay tribute to Tran Thu Do and honor his contributions to the formation and development of the Tran Dynasty. It also helps preserve historical traditions and instill the Vietnamese tradition of gratitude and remembrance among younger generations./.
