With additional workers and equipment deployed to accelerate construction, the project developer and local authorities are also working to complete the necessary procedures and clear the site for service roads, ensuring the project progresses in a coordinated manner and delivers its intended connectivity benefits as soon as possible.
In September, construction activity along the Ninh Binh section of the expressway was in full swing, with multiple work fronts operating simultaneously. Contractors have stepped up construction to make up for delays caused by prolonged heavy rainfall in July and August.
The project section in Ninh Binh province is 25.3 kilometres long and has a design speed of 120 kilometres per hour. It begins at the Mai Son Interchange, connecting with the eastern North South expressway in Yen Thang ward, and ends at the overpass across the Day River in Khanh Thien commune.
The expressway is being built to full four-lane standards, with total investment exceeding 9.11 trillion VND.
To date, all 217 hectares of land required for the 25.3-kilometre main carriageway have been handed over. Construction work on the main carriageway is valued at more than 2.07 trillion VND, equivalent to 50% of the contract value. Earthwork for the road embankment has been completed.
All 12 bridges along the route are currently under construction. Of the 19 underpasses, six have been completed, nine are under construction, while work on the remaining four is pending the completion of the required testing period for soil-cement piles before construction can proceed to the next stage.
Nguyen Quang Minh, Deputy Director of Ninh Binh province's Project Management Board No. 1, said the entire site for the main carriageway had been handed over and that the project developer was closely monitoring construction progress.
Contractors have been instructed to reorganize their work fronts and increase working hours and shifts at locations where conditions permit, he said. Current priorities include accelerating construction of bridges, local underpasses, road foundations and pavement sections where embankment loading has been completed, while ensuring sufficient supplies of construction materials to maintain continuous operations.
At the construction site, contractors have increased their workforce and equipment and established multiple work fronts, taking advantage of favorable weather conditions to accelerate individual components, particularly those that have a direct impact on the overall project schedule.
Alongside construction of the main carriageway, the development of service roads is also required to ensure uninterrupted travel and production activities for residents living and working along both sides of the expressway.
The project is scheduled for implementation from 2024 to 2026. A substantial volume of work remains, while construction progress depends on weather conditions, the availability of construction materials and the completion of related administrative procedures.
Therefore, alongside increasing manpower and equipment at construction sites, authorities and project stakeholders need to promptly resolve site-clearance issues for service roads, complete investment procedures and secure adequate supplies of construction materials.
Once completed, the expressway will connect directly with the eastern North South expressway at the Mai Son Interchange, helping strengthen Ninh Binh's external transport network and improve connectivity with the Red River Delta and the northern coastal region.
Accelerating construction while maintaining quality, technical standards and safety remains a key requirement throughout the project, with the ultimate goal of putting the expressway into operation at the earliest possible time and maximising the effectiveness of the investment./.
