Historical epic film on King Dinh Tien Hoang to hit cinemas on August 28

The film originated from a cooperation agreement on film development signed in October 2024 between the Vietnam Film Promotion and Development Association (VFDA) and Ninh Binh province. The agreement aims to promote filmmaking in connection with tourism development, as well as the growth of the local cultural and entertainment industries.

Directed by Nguyen Phan Quang Binh, the project has been a decade-long ambition for the filmmaker. It draws on mysterious folk legends surrounding the tomb of Dinh Tien Hoang, the first king to lay the foundations for an independent Vietnamese state after more than 1,000 years of Chinese domination.

Set in Dai Co Viet in the 10th century, the film explores the political and social upheavals that followed the assassination of King Dinh Tien Hoang.

Seven warriors are entrusted with a top-secret mission: racing against time and confronting hostile forces, they must transport 99 coffins believed to contain the king’s remains in seven different directions, deceiving enemies intent on desecrating the imperial tomb. Beyond protecting the remains of the founding king, their perilous journey is also a mission to preserve the spiritual essence and sacred energy of Dai Co Viet.

Produced by BHD, the film features director Nguyen Phan Quang Binh, action director Johnny Tri Nguyen and cinematographer K’Linh, alongside a prominent cast including Le Vu Long, Do Thi Hai Yen, Johnny Tri Nguyen, Quach Ngoc Ngoan, Hua Vi Van, People’s Artist Tu Long, Tran Thien Tu, Tuan Tran, Diep Quang Binh and Dang Tran.

Inspired by the history, culture and folk legends associated with the ancient capital of Hoa Lu, the film centres on the image of King Dinh Tien Hoang and characters embodying loyalty, courage and a strong commitment to serving the nation.

Many scenes were filmed at historical and cultural sites and scenic attractions across Ninh Binh, with the Trang An Landscape Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, serving as a key backdrop.

Through the cinematic lens, Ninh Binh is portrayed as a land of profound historical and cultural heritage, spectacular natural landscapes and warm, hospitable people. The province hopes the film will not only achieve artistic success but also serve as a bridge enabling domestic audiences and international viewers to gain a deeper understanding of Ninh Binh’s rich heritage and cultural identity./.
