Bo Bat ancient pottery-making art revives

Having disappeared for nearly 500 years, the ancient pottery-making art in Bo Bat (Bach Lien village, YenThanhcommune, Yen Mo district, Ninh Binh province) has been revived and is now thriving.

Bo Bat pottery had been formed over 3000 years ago. It is an original of Bat Trangceramic nowadays.

According to ancient documents, when King Ly Thai To took over the throne, he decided to move the capital from Hoa Lu,Ninh Binh province to Dai La (HaNoi city), five big families of Bo Bat village also moved to the new capital and formed a new ceramic village, called Bat Trang, along the bank of the Hong river.

After skilled pottery makers moved to the capital, the Bo Bat pottery village had no longer been active.

According to Mr. Tran Van Chien- Chairman of the People's Committee of YenThanhCommune, Mr. Pham VanVang,a resident in Bach Lien village, went to Bat Trang to learn how to make ceramics in 2000.

Three years later, Vang came back to his home town and set up a small workshop where he has produced Bo Bat ceramic items.

In 2006,Vang went to Bach Lien village – the original home village of the ancient pottery Bo Bat and founded a private enterprise, paving the way for the making of Bo Bat pottery to thrive again.

Bo Bat ceramic products are now popular among consumers and have received praise from ceramic makers nationwide. They have been exported to many countries, like Japan, Thailand, and the US.

Bo Bat ceramic products features their distinctive fine glaze, and standout fineness and flower decorations.

In particular, a special clay found in Bo Di in YenThanh commune is being used to make the number-one white ceramic products which require just 50 to 70 percent time of heating compared to other clays but still guarantee their fineness and hardness. This clay promises to contribute to the flourishing of the Bo Bat pottery craft village.

In the time to come, Bo Bat ceramics artisans will focus on making special glazes, especially the famous white one of Bo Bat.

In addition to that, Bo Bat ceramics will be decorated with famous landscapes ofNinhBinhto create unique products of Bo Bat.

Thanks to enthusiasm of Pham VanVangand people of YenThanhvillage, the Bo Bat pottery village is on its way to fare well again.
