In the past years, the northern province of Ninh Binh has continuously implemented many solutions to fight illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishingin a bid to have the European Commission (EC)'s "yellow card" warning against Vietnam's seafood removed.
Ninh Binh has over 18 kilometersof coastline. In the recent years, it has actively instructed related units and agencies to take a wide range of measures to prevent illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
Accordingly, the province has step up the dissemination of information about the Law on Fisheries and regulations on IUU fishing prevention among fishermen and related individuals and organisations.
Local authorities have increased patrols, inspections and control over activities at sea.
The Sub-Department of Fisheries under the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has regularly worked with Kim Son's Border Guard Station and Flotilla 2 of the provincial Border Guard Command to patrol and monitor fishing activities at sea, and handle violation cases.
Besides, the provincial Border Guard Command has regularly coordinated with related units in combating IUU fishing, monitoring and managing fishing vessels.
Competent agencies have provided local fishermen with knowledge about regulations on fishing activities as well as rules on IUU fishing.
The province updated all of fishing boats which had already registered, technically examined and licnesed to the national fisheries database.
By the end of September 2023, there were 67 fishing vessels and allof them had been licenced to exploit seafood.
Ninh Binh has completed the marking of fishing vessels. No fishing vessel have violated prohibited fishing areas, while eight offshore fishing boatshad installed vessel monitoring systems.
These measures showed Ninh Binh's efforts in implementing the Law on Fisherie and developing a responsible fishery industry, as well as its determination to lift the EC's "yellow card".
